Year-in-Review: The Best Movies of 2018

Entertainment

December 10, 2018

Some of us are film critics (or so we’d like to think), while some of us simply enjoy the popcorn-munching, fun-filled time that going to the movies has to offer. However (and why-ever) you watch, it’s important to not miss out on the best movies of 2018. Read on, then browse these top film titles with Xfinity and get to watching in no time.

A list of the best movies of 2018

Top at the Box Office

Black Panther

Starring Chadwick Boseman as Prince T’Challa (AKA, the superhero “Black Panther”), this Marvel fan-favorite broke tons of cinematic records in 2018 (and secured the top spot in the box office, as well). Following the journey of young Prince T’Challa as he struggles to govern a nation (Wakanda forever!) and defeat a dangerous adversary, this film is a thrilling and emotional ride from start to finish. Featuring impeccable performances from actors Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, and Michael B, Jordan, this 2018 release became an instant classic, and simply can’t be missed.

Avengers: Infinity War

Beaten out only by its fellow Marvel movie Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War took the second top spot at the box office in 2018. In this epic, “clash-of-the-titans” style superhero crossover, the beloved Avengers must band together with heroes across the galaxy to fight the evil, alien villain Thanos. Arguably made famous by the number of fans this film completely outraged (in a good way?), this installation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or “MCU”) will make you laugh, cry, and say, “what?!” by its nearly three-hour long finish. If you’re a Marvel fan in any capacity, you can’t pass this one up.

Year of the Sequels

Incredibles 2

The long-awaited sequel to an early 2000’s favorite, Incredibles 2 did not disappoint. In this part of the “Incredible” family’s story, Helen (AKA, “Elastigirl”) is off to save the world, while her husband, Bob (“Mr. Incredible”), must adapt to being a stay-at-home-dad. Their domestic bliss is shortly interrupted, however, by the nefarious Evelyn who threatens to outlaw superheroes forever. Catch this family favorite using X1, and see if The Incredibles (along with “Frozone” and friends) can once again save the world – and make it home before dinner.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

What’s better than Christ Pratt, dinosaurs, and epic volcanic eruptions? Even more Chris Pratt, dinosaurs, and epic volcanic eruptions, of course! Following the success of the Jurassic Park franchise-reboot Jurassic World, it was no wonder that a sequel to the newly revived series would be eminent. Picking up three years after the events of the first Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom sees the characters facing a new challenge on Isla Nublar. Will Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) be able to save their scaly friends from impending doom, years after humans have left the island? You’ll have to see for yourself.

Movies that Scared Us

A Quiet Place

The directorial debut of actor John Krasinski, this (extremely quiet) film will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat. Following a family of four (with a new baby on the way) as they attempt to survive a post-apocalyptic world full of super-hearing alien hunters, this horror-thriller is relentless in its ability to make audiences jump at the drop of a pin. Hailed for its extensive, accurate use of American Sign Language and casting of actress Millicent Simmons (who is deaf, like her character Regan in the film), A Quiet Place brings much more to the table than your standard horror flick.

Halloween

Few horror icons have achieved the reputation of the Halloween franchise’s dreaded Michael Myers, and with good reason – the guy just doesn’t give up. Taking place forty years after the events of the original, this series revival is a spine-chilling thrill from start to finish. Myers, recently escaped from prison, is off to once again hunt down his past victim, Laurie Strodie (Jamie Lee Curtis). This time, however, Laurie is expecting the crazed killer, and a Halloween-night showdown ensues. In other words, you don’t want to miss this terrifying revisit to a horror classic.
