How Low-Cost Sensors & AI are Driving Value & Cost Savings

for MDUs, Campuses & Other Property Managers

March 21, 2024

Building owners and property managers are leveraging Comcast Smart Solutions (CSS) to help manage utility costs and begin decarbonizing their buildings via innovative new offerings with potential returns-on-investment (ROI). Leveraging low-cost sensors and robust wireless broadband, CSS and its best-in-class technology providers are offering customized, cost-effective solutions designed to help multifamily properties manage their energy and water usage and expense. Additionally, in some buildings, CSS technology providers can help transform buildings into grid-interactive, revenue generating assets by participating in demand response programs run by utilities.

Watch as Comcast’s Director of Smart Solutions, Jake Purcell, is joined by Mark Kovscek, Founder and CEO, Conservation Labs and Jeff Hendler, Co-Founder, President and CEO, Logical Buildings as they discuss the benefits of low-cost sensors in buildings and how they help property managers.

More and more, owners and operators of multifamily properties, campuses, and mixed-use developments have goals for water and energy usage in their buildings. To help owners and operators achieve their sustainability and usage goals, CSS recommends actions such as deploying smart thermostats and enhancing existing building management software systems so that a building can pre-heat or pre-cool in advance of peak demand times when energy is most expensive.

Smart Building Solutions in New Jersey

Working with a large multifamily building in northern New Jersey, CSS technology provider Logical Buildings, deployed low-cost WiFi enabled thermostats and a data logger on the building’s utility meter. The new technology provided the building owner with newfound access to real-time energy usage to better manage peak and non-peak demand.

For many building owners, the first step toward managing utility costs and improving the performance of their buildings is to establish real-time access to “high-resolution” data about their building’s energy and water usage, down to the individual circuit or fixture. Acquiring this type of data from buildings, an effort that once involved complex, difficult-to-deploy technologies and expensive engagements with HVAC controls vendors, is now possible using low-cost sensors and ubiquitous wireless connectivity.
