If you have a CableCARD, you may receive an Equipment Update notification about a change in our video delivery system to MPEG-4 technology. You might need to update your CableCARD-ready devices.
Important information
- All Comcast CableCARDs are MPEG-4 compatible. However, the CableCARD-ready device you are using, such as a TiVo or TV, also needs to support the MPEG-4 format.
- There are a small number of older CableCARD-ready devices that may not be compatible, which would prevent you from viewing or recording channels delivered in MPEG-4 format.
- Most device manufacturers are aware of the upcoming changes to our network and may contact you directly regarding their devices.
- If you don't replace your incompatible equipment, you will lose many (or all) HD and SD channels when your network is updated to MPEG-4.
What should you do?
If you have a CableCARD with a CableCARD-ready device, we recommend that you check your device's owner's manual or manufacturer's website to see if it's compatible with MPEG-4 or if it needs to be replaced.
If your device isn't compatible with MPEG-4, you can:
- Contact the device manufacturer to ask about options to update or replace your device.
- If you replace your equipment, you'll need to contact us to pair and activate your CableCARD with your new device.
- Contact us to order a compatible device — current rental fees would apply.
FAQs
I have a CableCARD — how does this affect me?
All Comcast CableCARDs are already compatible with the MPEG-4 format. However, the CableCARD-ready device you're using also needs to support the MPEG-4 format. When we migrate channels to the new format, if your CableCARD-ready device is incompatible, you'll see a black or gray screen on HD and SD channels and will need to contact your device manufacturer.
How can I get in touch with my device manufacturer?
Review your user manual or search online to find the contact information of the manufacturer.
Will Comcast send me a letter letting me know about this change?
Yes. We'll send you three letters by mail, the first being 60 days before migrating the channels in your area. Certain device manufacturers may also contact you.
How do I know if I need to take action?
Contact your device manufacturer to find out if your device supports the MPEG-4 format. In addition, please note that all CableCARDs made after 2010 are MPEG-4 compatible, and some older devices have been upgraded to be compatible.
