This article provides steps for changing your home network's WiFi Channel Selection or Mode with the Xfinity app or the Gateway Admin Tool.
First, you should determine how your advanced WiFi settings are managed:
- Xfinity Gateways (XB2)
- If you have an XB2 Xfinity Gateway, you can access the Xfinity app.
- The features available to them do not include advanced WiFi settings.
- These customers can manage their advanced WiFi settings using the Admin tool.
- If you have an XB2 Xfinity Gateway, you can access the Xfinity app.
- 1st Generation xFi Gateways (XB3)
- If you have a 1st Generation xFi Gateway and no WiFi Boost Pods on your network, you can manage your advanced WiFi settings using the Xfinity app.
- Note: Advanced WiFi settings can also be managed using the Admin Tool, but the Xfinity app instructions are easier and accessible without connecting to the home network.
- xFi Advanced Gateways (XB6 or newer)
- Most of these gateways have been upgraded with software that manages advanced WiFi settings automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible.
- Advanced WiFi settings for gateways with this software enhancement are not visible and cannot be managed from the Admin Tool or Xfinity app.
- WiFi Boost Pods
- Pods require that you only have one WiFi network name and password.
- This allows all your devices to seamlessly connect to the network that will provide the best WiFi signal at any given time.
- Advanced WiFi settings aren't visible and can't be managed from the Admin Tool or Xfinity app.
- Pods require that you only have one WiFi network name and password.
If your advanced WiFi settings are visible and your channel settings are set to Auto, your Xfinity gateway will automatically detect and connect devices using the optimal channel to provide the best WiFi signal at any given time. This selection is based on several factors, including:
- The number of other devices currently using a channel.
- The distance from the device to the gateway.
- Whether the device is capable of connecting using 5 GHz.
If you don't see the 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi channel settings (i.e., WiFi Mode, Channel Selection and Channel Mode), it means that these settings are being managed automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible.
Using the Xfinity app
- Sign in to the Xfinity app with your Xfinity ID and password.
