What is local number portability?
Local number portability (LNP) is a government mandate that requires voice service providers to allow customers with eligible phone numbers to retain their phone numbers when changing service providers. The process of keeping your phone number when you switch providers is called "porting."
Can I keep my current phone number when I subscribe to Xfinity Voice?
If your current phone number is eligible to be ported, you can keep it when you purchase your new Xfinity Voice service. You can check your number's eligibility during the order placement process. Most numbers are able to be ported; however, there are a variety of factors that can affect your number's porting eligibility.
How do I port my current phone number to Xfinity Voice?
To port your phone number, you will need to place an order for Xfinity Voice service. This can be done online at xfinity.com/learn/home-phone-services. Upon beginning the enrollment process, you will be asked to either port in your current phone number or choose a new one.
Should I cancel my existing service before porting my phone number to Xfinity Voice?
No. Your phone number must remain active with your old service provider during the porting process. Once your phone number successfully ports to Xfinity Voice, your old service provider should automatically disconnect your line (unless otherwise stated in your service contract with that provider). After your port is complete, you can contact your previous provider to ensure that your voice service was disconnected and, if necessary, re-bundle any other services that still remain with that provider.
What are the requirements to port my phone number to Xfinity Voice?
- Your phone number must be active with your old service provider.
- You must establish service in the same geographical area (rate center) as your old residence. Comcast cannot port phone numbers across rate center boundaries.
- Government regulations require us to obtain your oral or written consent to port your phone number. You will be directed to complete this verification after your order is placed.
- You must not have a Primary Interexchange Carrier (PIC) or carrier freeze applied to the phone number through your old service provider.
- Your old service provider may ask Comcast to provide additional information to process the port request, including account numbers and PIN codes associated with your old account. If this occurs, a Comcast agent will contact you to obtain the information required to facilitate the port request.
What is a Primary Interexchange Carrier (PIC) or carrier freeze?
Some telephone numbers allow customers to "freeze" their accounts in order to prevent their phone numbers from being ported out to a different carrier. When a freeze is in place, even legitimate requests for a change in service provider will not be processed. Only the consumer can contact the old service provider to request that a freeze be removed. Be aware that separate long distance (PIC) and local (PLOC or RSCP) freezes can exist, and removing one will not necessarily remove the other.
How long will it take to port my phone number?
Most ports are processed within three to five business days. However, the timing can vary depending on several factors, including the carrier from which you are porting and the volume of porting orders currently being processed, as well as any specific or unique circumstances for your porting order.
Will Comcast charge me any fees for porting my phone number?
We don't charge a fee for porting numbers to or from Xfinity Voice. When porting out of Xfinity Voice, you may incur an Early Termination Fee if you port out before the end of a minimum contract term.
How do I port out my Xfinity Voice phone number to another service provider?
In order to port out your Xfinity Voice phone number to another carrier, please contact the new service provider and they will guide you through the process. Do not disconnect your Xfinity Voice service until the port is complete.
Is it possible for Comcast to port a mobile telephone number and use it as a Xfinity Voice landline number?
Yes. Comcast can port a mobile number and use it as a Xfinity Voice landline number as long as the telephone number is currently active and there isn't a rate center incompatibility issue.
