Is your computer not performing like it used to?
As you continue to use your computer or laptop, you might notice its speed begin to decrease over time. A sudden or noticeable drop in your computer's speed might be a sign of a problem that is fixable. Find out how to get your speed back to normal with these troubleshooting tips.
Restart your computer
The first step in troubleshooting a slow computer is a restart, which can often fix less serious issues that are slowing down your computer's speed.
Note: If you think the problem may be with your internet connection and not your computer, refer to Restart Your Wireless Gateway, Modem or Router or Xfinity Internet or WiFi Connection Troubleshooting for more information and helpful tips.
Update your programs and operating system
To make sure you're getting the most from your computer, you'll want to regularly check for updates to programs that you use often, such as a web browser, as well as to the operating system that your computer runs.
Browsers like Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Safari will often alert you when updates become available. Simply follow the prompts given to you by the browser program to download and install these updates. You can also check for updates on your own at your preferred browser's site.
Updates to your operating system, generally Windows or Mac OS, can also help speed up a computer. Your computer should alert you to any available updates, but larger updates, like switching from Windows XP to Windows 7, might require you to purchase installation kits from Windows or Apple.
For customers who have a PC, it's highly recommended that you run Windows 8.1 (64 bit) or newer. For customers who have a Mac, it's recommended that you run OS X 10.8 or newer.
Scan for spyware
Spyware is a kind of program that is installed on your computer without your knowledge through spam emails and untrustworthy sites. These programs send out your private information to unknown parties and can also slow down your computer. It's recommended that you run regular scans for spyware.
