WiFi Motion is not a home security service and is not professionally monitored.
WiFi Motion is provided to you as part of your Xfinity Internet services and subject to the Xfinity Residential Services Agreement and our Xfinity Privacy Policy. Comcast does not monitor the motion and/or notifications generated by the service.
The placement of your Xfinity Gateway and WiFi-connected devices, along with your home size, layout, and building materials, can impact the way WiFi signals connect and may limit the ability of the service to detect motion.
WiFi Motion will function only in areas of your home where you have strong WiFi signals traveling between your gateway and your WiFi-connected devices, and Comcast does not guarantee or warrant performance.
You are responsible for periodically testing your WiFi signal to determine if it notifies you of motion in the locations within your home where you desire motion detection.
You are solely responsible for complying with any laws applicable to your use of the WiFi Motion and your use of the services. You confirm that you are using WiFi Motion for your own lawful, residential purposes. Subject to applicable law, Comcast may disclose information generated by your WiFi Motion to third parties without further notice to you in connection with any law enforcement investigation or proceeding, any dispute to which Comcast is a party, or pursuant to a court order or subpoena.
This article provides an overview of WiFi Motion — including how to enable and use the feature. For more information, see answers to FAQs about WiFi Motion.
Note: This feature is currently only available for select Xfinity Internet customers as part of an early access preview. WiFi Motion is not available for Xfinity Internet customers who also subscribe to Xfinity Home Pro Protection.
What you'll need
- Xfinity Internet
- An eligible Xfinity Gateway (Technicolor XB7 CGM4981COM or XB8)
- Xfinity app version 5.28
- Your own WiFi-enabled connected devices.
Note: WiFi Motion in the Xfinity app is currently not available for customers with WiFi Boost Pods or Storm-Ready WiFi.
Activating the feature
WiFi Motion is off by default. To activate the feature, perform the following steps:
- Open the Xfinity app and navigate to the Security tab.
- Locate the awareness card for the feature and select Turn on WiFi Motion.
- Once you’ve read the additional information on the next screen, select the Get Started button.
- Review the Xfinity Residential Services Agreement and Xfinity Privacy Policy, check the box to agree, and then select Continue.
- The app will list your WiFi-connected devices that are suitable for WiFi Motion. The best devices remain stationary and are always powered on. Depending on how many suitable devices are connected to your WiFi, you’ll see one of the following:
- The option to manually select devices. Once you have selected up to three devices, select Next to proceed.
- The option to Use recommended devices. (You’ll also have the option to Manually select devices.)
- If no suitable devices are found, you’ll be provided with additional information, then prompted to Try again.
- Check that the devices you’d like to use are powered on, connected to your Xfinity WiFi, and not in a closed off space or outdoors, which can cause interference.
- Some stationary and always-on devices still may not sense motion reliably, like when they go into low power mode or sleep mode or have less than ideal WiFi signal.
- Devices connected to a WiFi extender, such as an WiFi Boost Pod, aren’t suitable.
- Try bringing devices closer to the gateway or restarting them to fix the connection.
- Once devices are selected, the activation experience will finish and display a loading screen.
- Once complete, you’ll see a confirmation screen to let you know WiFi Motion is now on.
- Selecting Done will take you to the Security tab.
- Review the FAQs so you understand how your WiFi Motion works.
Using WiFi Motion
Once the feature is activated, you can see motion sensing activity within the Security tab of the Xfinity app. Select the status to view more details and see current motion activity. Selecting the WiFi Motion event on this screen will take you to an activity feed of all WiFi Motion events.
Adjusting settings for WiFi Motion
To adjust settings for this feature, select the gear icon in the top right corner of the WiFi Motion live view page.
On the WiFi Motion settings page, you can configure settings related to WiFi Motion. You can toggle WiFi Motion on or off, navigate to motion activity, or adjust your preferences to update which WiFi-connected devices you’re using with WiFi Motion. You can also adjust Pet and Motion sensitivity settings on this page.
You can also configure settings using Home and Away modes’ alerts and notifications. Please see WiFi Motion FAQs for more information about how each of these settings work.

Pet sensitivity
If you’d like to prevent your pet’s movement from causing motion notifications, you can exclude pet motion in your WiFi Motion settings by turning on the Exclude Small Pets feature.
Motion is detected based on the amount of signal disruption taking place between the Xfinity Gateway and your selected WiFi-connected devices, so motion from small pets (around 40 pounds or less) can be filtered out while keeping you notified of large movements more likely to be caused by humans.
- You must turn on High motion sensitivity in order to turn on the Exclude Small Pets feature, because we need lots of information to best differentiate between pet and human motion.
- If you’re still receiving unwanted notifications with small pets excluded, you can try turning off Exclude Small Pets and switching to Medium or Low sensitivity instead.
Since there's no visual information associated with WiFi Motion, it cannot always differentiate pet motion from human motion, particularly for children that may also be around 40 pounds or less. Pets larger than 40 pounds or more may continue to cause motion notifications. Be sure to take this into account when choosing whether you want to turn on this feature.
In addition to customizing your pet sensitivity settings, placing your WiFi Motion devices at least four feet off the floor can also help prevent notifications from pet motion.
- Managing pet sensitivity
- Pet sensitivity settings for WiFi Motion are accessible by selecting the WiFi Motion status on the Security tab, and then selecting the gear icon in the top right corner of the WiFi Motion Live View page.
- On the WiFi Motion settings page, you can exclude pet motion from your notifications and motion event history by tapping Pet sensitivity, then toggling on Exclude small pets. Even when pet motion is excluded from your notifications and motion event history, it is still detected and can be viewed in real time on the WiFi Motion Live View page.
Motion sensitivity
Motion sensitivity sets the level of motion needed to cause motion detection. As you lower motion sensitivity, it will take more motion to cause motion detection.
High sensitivity may be for you if you want to capture as much motion as possible. With high sensitivity, you may detect small movements like the wave of a hand.
- This setting may be best if you live in a house where you don't share any walls with your neighbors, like in a detached/single-family home, or if you want to be notified of all movement while you're away from home.
Medium sensitivity may be for you if high sensitivity is causing too many or irrelevant notifications. With medium sensitivity, bigger movements, like a person walking through a room, will cause motion detection.
- This may be useful if you share a wall with your neighbors, like in a duplex or townhome, especially if your WiFi Motion devices are close to shared walls.
Low sensitivity may be for you if medium sensitivity is causing too many or irrelevant notifications. With low sensitivity, you'll capture large movements like a person dancing or multiple people walking around.
- This may be useful if you share multiple walls with your neighbors, like in an apartment complex, but you may miss some meaningful motion.
After changing your motion sensitivity level, it’s important to verify you’re receiving the appropriate notifications and alerts for your needs and to review and update your settings accordingly.
