This document provides step-by-step instructions on how you can activate or remove your WiFi Boost Pods from your home network using the Xfinity app.
If you have additional questions about WiFi Boost Pods, please refer to our FAQs.
Note: Your xFi Gateway must be activated before you can set up your WiFi Boost Pods. You will not be able to use xFi or activate Pods if your Gateway is in Bridge Mode. Pods activation requires a supported mobile operating system; please see how to get started with Xfinity xFi for details.
Before activating your WiFi Boost Pods
- Download the Xfinity app on the App Store or Google Play.
- Think about where your Pods should be placed. Your Pods should be in a room halfway between your gateway and an area without coverage.
- Try to avoid a connection hop (Pods that are connected to the gateway through another Pod).
- For optimal performance, Pods should be connected to the Gateway.
- Note: After activating your Pods, use the Xfinity app to determine if a Pod is connected to the Gateway or to another Pod.
- Go to the WiFi tab.
- Select View WiFi equipment.
- Select the Pod you want to check.
- Select Pod Details.
- The Connection Point will detail if the Pod is connected to the Gateway or to another Pod on your network.
- For the best signal and performance, please ensure that Pods are visible and not blocked by furniture or other large objects.
- Avoid metal objects when placing Pods, as they can interfere with the WiFi signal.
- Don't plug your Pods into power outlets that are controlled by a wall switch.
Setting requirements
To activate and use your Pods, your xFi Gateway must not be in Bridge Mode, and your home network must have the following settings enabled:
- An enabled and broadcasting WiFi network (i.e., your WiFi network cannot be disabled through the Gateway's Admin Tool (10.0.0.1).
- One WiFi network name and password (i.e., you cannot have a separate WiFi network name and password for your radio bands, either 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz, 5G Hz, and 6 GHz, depending on model).
- Your network still has all radio bands.
- This allows your Gateway to sort out the best connection at any given time for your devices.
- A password to join your WiFi network (i.e., your WiFi Security Mode setting must be password-protected).
Note: If you make any changes to your WiFi network name or password, certain WiFi-based devices in your home may prompt you to enter in the new name and password before using the device.
Getting started
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone (recommended).
- Sign in with your Xfinity ID.
- Select the Account tab from the bottom right corner of the app.
- Select Activate WiFi Boost Pods under Devices section.
- Choose which WiFi Boost Pod you’re installing.
- Tap Get Started to begin activating your WiFi Boost Pods!
- If you already have WiFi Boost Pods (1st Generation) on your network and are now activating WiFi Boost Pods (2nd Generation), you'll be instructed to unplug your older Pods and select They’re Unplugged when you’re ready to proceed with the activation.
- Note: It’s recommended that you leave your older 1st Generation Pods unplugged for 48 hours to allow your new Pods to adapt to your coverage needs.
- After 48 hours, if you still need to extend coverage to other areas in your home, you can re-add your older Pods.
- Note: It’s recommended that you leave your older 1st Generation Pods unplugged for 48 hours to allow your new Pods to adapt to your coverage needs.
Activate your WiFi Boost Pods
- Plug in your first Pod to an active electrical outlet in your home.
- Note: Do not connect your Pods directly to your xFi Gateway using the Ethernet port on the bottom of the Pod.
- The Pods connect wirelessly to the xFi Gateway.
- You won't be able to activate your Pods if one is connected directly to the Gateway.
- Note: Do not connect your Pods directly to your xFi Gateway using the Ethernet port on the bottom of the Pod.
- Select Next to view tips on Pod placement.
- Hold your phone six inches away from your first Pod to ensure that the Xfinity app can associate the Pods with your account and connect the first Pod to your Gateway.
- If you have more than one Pod, once your first Pod is connected, you'll need to plug in your remaining Pods throughout your home.
- Note: If you have additional areas of your home that need coverage, your remaining Pods should be plugged into outlets halfway between your Gateway and those areas.
- Once the rest of your Pods have been plugged in, tap All Pods Ready to Go!
- As your remaining Pods are plugged in, they'll begin to come online. When all Pods have been connected, tap Name Your Pods.
- You can name your Pods in any order. To do so, choose a Pod to name and hold your mobile device close to that Pod.
- Once the app identifies which Pod you are naming, you'll be presented with the option to assign the Pod a name.
- Enter a name and tap Confirm Name. Repeat steps five and six to name each remaining Pod.
- Once naming is complete, tap Finish Setup.
- The activation process is now complete! Over the next few days, your home WiFi network will be optimized.
- Note: Advanced Settings like WiFi Mode, Channel, and Channel Width will now be managed automatically.
- Tap Back to Overview to end the set-up.
- After successful activation, the Overview tab will show status of Gateway, Pods, and Advanced Security (if enabled).
- To see your Gateway, all your Pods, and their statuses, go to WiFi, then select View WiFi equipment.
Notes:
- Once your Pods are activated, the light on your device should stop flashing and remain off.
- You must activate Advanced Security through the Xfinity app.
- If you’re having trouble activating your WiFi Boost Pods, try restarting your Xfinity Gateway.
